The professor once said, “I know someone that makes more money than you.” The professor pointed at one of the students, and asked, “How much money does the wealthiest person you know make?” That student said sarcastically, a billion dollars. Again the professor asked another student, “How about you?” That person said about a million dollars. Making us think it was a real person. Another student said “$100,000.”
The professor took a moment a framed another question. “How much does the poorest person have on account as a liability?” A different student was pointed out and said trillions of dollars. Making us think it was a nation. One student said about a million in business. Then and finally, one student said zero. It might be how much that person has in liability.
The professor shouted, “Bingo." You are the wealthiest person I know.” In this world of financial forecasting and modeling, we often forget that some of the traditional lessons that make us, younger ones, realize that the older generation might be correct or more right. That is, even though there are liabilities, it could be massive amounts that might lead a person to say a person has more money than the other. It’s not always about how much money you earn.
Calculative numbers are a great lesson of its own, but if there are speculative liabilities, it should make you ponder the otherwise. Many think financial reporting is a gloss for many companies, but a lot think it’s about showing the liabilities of a company. Someone should know, because of course, they might be the person that has more money. And the person of a group to help your company grow.
